If you've been following the news or social media lately you'll notice a significant number of drone sightings around the country. Residents from the State of New Jersey have been seeing and reporting multiple drones flying in a formation or individually since November.
The Federal Aviation Administration, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security are investigating but currently have no answers.
Officially, they have not been deemed a security threat but I have my own opinion about that. While images and video of the drones show they have navigation and anti-collision lights, they are not broadcasting ADS-B or Remote ID. As a professional aviator, I think this makes them a threat to the National Airspace System at a minimum.
Right now, the source of these drones has not been located, and some are shown to be coming in off the Atlantic Ocean, at one point following a US Coast Guard vessel. The New Jersey State Police and NJOHSP are working with Federal partners and sharing information to identify the source.
They have a reporting QR code that you can use if you see a suspicious or concerning #drone(s) in your area. Feel free to spread this code around or reach out to me if you have any questions.
